Completely Pro-Life, Part 2

March 11, 2010

Back in January, I opened up about being completely pro-life. In the coming months, you’ll be hearing from some guest bloggers on this theme. They’ll be talking about adoption advocacy, how our everyday choices affect the lives of others worldwide, and so much more. I’m excited to share these incredible voices with you!

In January, I shared a video about the exposure of unborn babies to toxic chemicals. As part of my pro-life philosophy, I believe that every person, especially those who cannot choose otherwise, should be protected from these highly dangerous chemicals.

If you didn’t have the chance to watch the video, below is some information I pulled from the EWG’s website.

  • Passed in 1976 and never amended since, the Toxic Substances Control Act declared safe some 62,000 chemicals already on the market, even though there were little or no data to support this policy.
  • Since that time another 20,000 chemicals have been put into commerce in the United States, also with little or no data to support their safety.
  • In 2006, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) found up to 287 industrial chemicals, pollutants, and pesticides in 10 newborn babies, measured in umbilical cord blood collected at the moment of birth.
  • These pollutants included 133 carcinogens, 157 chemicals that can harm the brain and nervous system, and 151 chemicals linked to birth defects.
  • Children face the greatest risks from exposures to carcinogens: Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) studies show that infants up to age two are, on average, ten times more vulnerable to carcinogenic chemicals than adults, and for some cancer-causing agents are up to 65 times more vulnerable (EWG 2003).
  • These exposures, early in life, add to exposures over a lifetime to give the U.S. the highest cancer rates in the world.
  • Tests found fire retardants called PBDEs in the breast milk of every one of 20 first-time mothers who volunteered for our study, at average levels 75 times higher than those found in breast milk of women in Europe.
  • These fire retardants can disrupt the delicate balance of hormones that are critical to the proper growth and development of the brain, nervous system and many other organs and systems in a baby’s tiny body. Breast milk is still near universally considered a better food for babies than formula. But breast milk free of toxic industrial chemicals is better still.

There is also evidence linking each of the health problems below with increased exposure to toxins:

  • One in six children has a developmental disorder.
  • Childhood asthma has more than doubled in 20 years.
  • One in every eight babies is born prematurely.
  • Sperm counts are falling at 1 percent a year.
  • Recent U.S. studies indicate that girls are entering puberty earlier than ever before.

Amanda- it is so refreshing for someone to actually study and research all this information and actually have a knowledgeable response. I really enjoy learning all this stuff you find out about. We do have to be careful of what we put into our bodies and our child’s. As we all know our body is the temple of the Lord– we should care about what goes into it, food, toxins, bad movies, music,etc.. We need to be careful as Christians.
thanks amanda for a great post!

Amanda- Recently with my weight loss pursuit I really have finally, for the first time, taken into consideration the INGREDIENTS of what Ive been eating myself…I was really saddened to see the masses of artificial substances in everything. Stuff that in small quantities may not do much harm, but in MASS amounts (eaten daily), certainly does me no good.
I was listening to KTIS this week and one of the hosts said they have a new rule in their house for the whole family: “If God didnt make it, we dont eat it. And things God didnt make (sweets and treats) are saved for special occasions only.” It seems harsh, but you know- God made healthy foods and ingredients for us, for a reason!
Taking care of ourselves will help US take better care of our children, and its all a great part about being concerned for our quality of life. Unfortunately, we cant trust the FDA- they continue to approve medicines with more side effects than benefits, and they will NOT support the use of natural supplements or nutrition, saying it cant be ‘regulated.’ Its really the simple fact that they will stop making money when fewer people are sick.
Completely pro-life is an awareness for kids, adults, and everyone of Gods creations I think- so important to be respectful of life, and aware of how satan has found a way to bring toxins to a new level. The umbilical cord studies done over the years are REALLY eye opening. Wow. Im trying to cut back on unnatural things in my food, as well as in my body care products (which MK is becoming more aware of too) and just doing things SIMPLE. As far as food is concerned, it seems like the more SIMPLE we try to be, probably the more SAFE we are as well!!! Life is precious, and Im starting to take MY life more seriously. Amen for carrots!! HAHAHAH~~~!!
