A few good books

March 2, 2010

I read a lot of really crummy to mediocre children’s books throughout the day.

It’s a mad dash to grab stuff off the library shelf that has no more than one or two short paragraphs a page. Plus, I have to be able to carry the books and Ainsley home again, so I’m limited to what fits in the bag and is usually in paperback version.

So we often end up with some duds.

But we also end up with some pearls.

Ultimately, I’m really trying to find books that…

  • are enjoyable to read for Ainsley, Daddy, and Mama,
  • help expand our minds,
  • help us explore our great big world,
  • expose us to different styles of illustration,
  • are beautiful and pleasing to look at,
  • connect us to a variety of cultures, environments, and social settings,
  • encourage us to love and appreciate others,
  • and help us relate to real life experiences.

Here are just ten (of the dozens and dozens) of the books we’ve enjoyed recently:

To see more of what we’ve been reading, check out my Shelfari page.

And, please, share what books you’re loving lately!

I agree, it is tough to grab good books at the library. I swear our local one hates little kids so I’m usually trying to keep him calm – quiet -, flip through all the dvds which have no rhyme or reason to find an elmo or mickey mouse and get a couple books that don’t look like some child threw up on it or have other unsavory bodily fluids on them.

today based on a rec from this site which reviews children’s books every monday (I found last night I went to the area with margaret wise brown (of the goodnight moon fame). we got a couple of hers and one other that was near – our favorite from the group is “a little good little bad pig” (I think) and the other one (not by her) that has beautiful pictures is a sock is a pocket for your toes by elizabeth scanlon. (they didn’t have the poem book but I put a hold on it, it looks great)

anna’s very favorite lately is “tumble bumble” by felicia bond. great illustrations! anna asks for it all the time. she calls it “bumble bumbo”, pretty cute! another favorite of hers is “just in case you ever wonder” by max lucado, she calls that one “my book!”
