greenitude: un-junk your mail

February 16, 2009

Fact: Every year, it takes 100 million trees to send us our junk mail.

Fact: More than nine large trees worth of paper arrive at our home each year, and the response rate is less than 2% (it’s 0% in our home).

Fact: I can stop the 10.8 pieces of junk mail that arrive at my house each week on average in less than five minutes

Visit (or call 1-888-567-8688 ) to take your name off the mailing lists of major credit bureaus. It will keep you off the list for five years. (Armed with your spouse’s or roommate’s social security number, you can take them off the list, too!)

Goodbye, 40 pounds of junk mail each year.

Hello, beautiful tree left standing.

Junk mail is free advertisement for the company and they are the ones fronting the bill.

Going green and global warming are things backed by Hollywood.
So between gay marriage, Obama, Going Green and Gobal warming…

I think I have had enough of Hollywood.

While I understand that this is free advertisement for companies, I also know that for us, we never respond to the junk mail in a way that causes us to go make a purchase from said company. So, if we are not going to buy anything as a result of junk mail, then why wouldn’t we stop the junk mail? It’s a waste for the companies to send it to us, and it’s a waste to use the paper.

Also, as a side note…just because going green is backed by Hollywood, doesn’t mean that it is all wrong. We definitely need to be careful as there can be an association made between people going green and Hollywood. However, there is also a strong association to being a Christian and going green. There is a strong biblical basis for being good stewards of our earth, our environment, and ourselves. I think it’s important to distinguish that we do this not because of Hollywood, but because we have been convicted to do so by the Word of God.

So…I agree with you that Hollywood backs a lot of garbage, but there are small and simple truths in there that get caught in the mess that need to be redeemed for the sake of the Gospel. These truths we need to take away from Hollywood because they seem to want to lay claim to everything, no matter what it is, because they want to tolerate everything, even some Christians views that they don’t even realize are Christian views to begin with.

    That’s my two cents worth.

And for the record, I have had enough of Hollywood as well!

    But let’s reclaim the truth!
