Black: Out, Colors: In

August 15, 2008

Alternately titled: Black and White Colors

Last night, we drove home from a party around 9:00 to find that White Bear Avenue was more like Black Bear Avenue. From the Maplewood Community Center to well-past our street a few miles down, there were no lights. No street lights. No stop lights (or go lights). No lighted business signs. No scrolling sales on the Walgreens sign. A beacon in this unfamiliar urban darkness, Taco Bell was glowing thanks to a generator and the tail lights wrapped around the drive-through.

My sister, Grace, moved in this week. As the big sister, I got a little panicked that she was “lost” in the dark in our house. I don’t even know where to find the flashlights. What would she do? I called her and asked if power was out at home, too. “Yes, just for about 10-15 minutes.” Whew. I have a tough time remembering that Grace is now almost 21 and not 9 years old anymore, so of course she had found a flashlight and lit some candles. In fact, she probably would have done that as a 9 year old, too. She’s so resourceful and brave.

When we got out of the car in our dark alley, our neighbor started talking to us (our invisible neighbor, again, thanks to no power). I could hear the jingling collar on their new puppy, and recognized Matt’s voice as he and Scott discussed flashlights and the geography of the power outage. Very weird having a conversation with an invisible neighbor and his ghost-dog.

Our arrival through the back door was greeted with a seance-like glow of candles and a more-than-okay grown-up little sister. While discussing what to do if the power stayed out (What about our groceries in the fridge? Do we have batteries for our alarm clock? What if I get too warm without air conditioning and our ceiling fan? Are we going to miss Phelps’ events? You know, the important stuff.), we wrapped gifts for camp staff by candlelight. It was so Little House on the Prairie.

About 10 minutes before Phelps’ race for Gold #6 (this is how I tell time at night during the Olympics), the kitchen lights flickered back on, as did all the other lights which illuminated our sea breeze and cranberry-scented house. I immediately turned on the TV so as not to miss the aforementioned Phelps race. Grace warmed up some water for her tea. Scott peeked out the front window to look at all the street lights and welcoming front porch lights on our block. Ahh… power.

The groceries in the fridge? A-ok. The alarm clock? Plugged in. The air conditioning and ceiling fan? Kept me under the covers all night. Phelps? He took another gold and had the top time in his 100m fly semifinal. All is well.

Now you know about the “black: out”. What about the “colors: in”?

My favorite color is creamy. You know, creamy coffee. Creamy candles. Creamy cashmere.

What’s your favorite color?
